5/26/2018 Woke up to a John Cage-ian kind of morning reading Minor White 'Passages'. Peepers... Woodpeckers... birds... fire crackling... Even roosters. Mosquitoes not too bad yet and haven't seen any ticks. I hear in a musical sense, G - A - B.flat - C, and anything in between. The peepers have stopped. They sing as if in a choral monotype. A polyphony of sound but the tones are so close together and they all start and stop in unison. Patter patter patter of the woodpecker. Chirp chirp chirp of the robins and sparrows. Crackle crackle the creek ripples... starlings, crows, bluejays.... beautiful morning away from home along French Creek. Peaceful. Made it through the night with only a mild drizzle. Today - still enjoying our beautiful space even if over done. I'm slightly convinced of its benefits. Protection from rain. Chairs. Books. And with only the digital camera & a crappy lens. I've made almost 100 images - of nature. Reading Minor White-'Mirrors Messages Manifestations' pg III "To photograph something for what it is, you have to go out of your self, out of your way to understand the object, its fact and essence. When you photograph things for what else they are, the object goes out of its way to understand you." p.111 p. 22 - "No matter how slow the film, Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer it has chosen." p. 15 - Taking vs. making - "By offering here something of my understanding of photography I can continue to earn the images I have been given." ---------- 5/27/2018 Noon-ish on Sunday, beautiful day again - no rain, a few clouds - more images - more painting. Need: chairs! Level ground! Almost time for a beer! "Be still with yourself until the object of you attention affirms your presence." another quote of Minor White's On page 194 (Mirrors Messages Manifestations - Minor White) he talks about his modes of photography, of which there are four. I will have to summarize because it's too extensive to put here. I urge all who read this, to find this book and keep it precious.... First branch of Awareness: Four Modes - First branch: possessive, greed for all visible Second branch: memory of things passed and the present invisible (Impressions & experiences pile up but are not written down - a memory - make equivalent during the present - my personal interpretation of it - djk) Third branch: creativity in respect to things, person, or spirit. ... portraits involved the invocation of a state of rapport when only a camera stands between two people. Fourth branch: "Camerawork in the pursuit of consciousness." Awareness of IT-I and I-IT? Equivalence is only for the metaphor-minded who an cope with the abstract level of any image; Creativeness in photography relates to the realization that the ultimate medium of any artist is the mind and the psyche of those eating his images; Read the Book! I don't have a degree in art or photography. My degree was in music. If you can read music, there's no end to what you can do. I have a passion for photography and art and a life time's worth of experience, a lot of common sense and a father and grandfather (both engineers) who gave me the ability to work with tools. If I can do this, anyone can. It's not difficult, and it is fun! Archives
